About AFS

AFS has evolved from its origins as a volunteer ambulance corps in 1914 to what we are today, the world's most experienced international student exchange organization with programs in over 50 countries and over 30,000 volunteers. This section aims to share our history, values and beliefs.

Organizational Development

This session aims to helping people understand how organizations work, specially AFS organizations around the world. It shares knowledge to overcome difficulties in building and keeping a solid organizational culture according to AFS values.

Volunteer Development

Collaborating with local community members, AFS services and support are primarily delivered by volunteers. The goal for this section is to provide information and suggestions for developing AFS most precious resources - its volunteers.

Chapter Development

Chapters are the AFS local units. The resources in this section are for those interested in developing local organisations and learning more about how to grow as citizens acting at local level for their organisations.

Intercultural Learning

With peace as a starting point, we believe that our program educates individuals about cultural differences, and helps them overcome judgmental, polarized reactions to other cultures. Tolerance is critical to overcoming conflict. At the same time, we believe that real understanding of other cultures is important, and it is much more than just co-existing without conflict. It involves an acceptance, an adaptation, an appreciation of and an engagement in the other culture. It means building real relationships of trust, respect and affection with people from other cultures.
